DISTANCES, TRANSIT DURATIONS, CREW TIME LIMITATIONS, ONBOARD EXPERTISE, VEHICLE CAPABILITIES, AND OTHER FACTORS SIGNIFICANTLY LIMIT THE ABILITY OF HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT CREWS TO RESPOND TO IN-FLIGHT ANOMALIES. THERE IS A NEED FOR A REPAIR, MANUFACTURING, AND FABRICATION (RMAF) FACILITY TO INCREASE THE CAPABILITY OF THE CREW TO RECOVER FROM SPACECRAFT COMPONENT FAILURES BY COMBINING ASPECTS OF MACHINE SHOP, SOFT GOODS LAB, AND REPAIR SHOP INTO AN IVA CAPABILITY FOR BOTH MICROGRAVITY AND SURFACE SPACECRAFT. A RMAF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RESTORING DAMAGED COMPONENTS TO WORKING ORDER (REPAIR), KEEPING COMPONENTS IN SERVICE OR PROPERLY FUNCTIONING (MAINTENANCE), AND CREATING NEW COMPONENTS FROM RAW OR SCAVENGED MATERIALS (FABRICATION). THIS RESPONSIBILITY EXTENDS NOT ONLY TO THE HABITAT, BUT TO ALL OTHER ELEMENTS SHARING THE SAME DESTINATION ENVIRONMENT (E.G., LANDERS, ROVERS, ROBOTS, POWER SYSTEMS, SCIENCE INSTRUMENTS, ETC.). NASA IS EXPLORING SPACE ARCHITECTURES THAT CAN SERVE AS NEXT STEPS TO BUILD UPON THE CURRENT ARTEMIS PROGRAM. THE COMMON HABITAT ARCHITECTURE STUDY IS BASED ON A SUITE OF COMMON SPACECRAFT ELEMENTS THAT CAN BE USED FOR LONG-DURATION HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT IN MULTIPLE DESTINATIONS, INCLUDING THE MOON, MARS, AND DEEP SPACE. BECAUSE MOST HABITATS INTENDED FOR USE BEYOND LEO DO NOT RETURN TO EARTH, YET MAY OPERATE FOR DECADES, IT CAN BE ASSUMED THAT EVEN LOW PROBABILITY FAILURES WILL EVENTUALLY OCCUR AND THERE MUST BE A WAY TO RECOVER FROM THEM AND CONTINUE THE MISSION. THUS, THE COMMON HABITAT MUST INCLUDE THE RMAF CAPABILITY. THE RMAF SPEAKS TO AN OVERARCHING GAP OF INABILITY TO MITIGATE SPACECRAFT COMPONENT FAILURES. THE RMAF GOES BEYOND THE REPLACEMENT OF FAILED COMPONENTS WITH SPARES AND FOCUSES ON THE CAPABILITIES TO RESTORE FAILED COMPONENTS TO WORKING ORDER, MAKING THEM EFFECTIVELY THE NEW SPARE. BECAUSE SOFTGOODS ARE USED IN MANY SPACE EXPLORATION APPLICATIONS, AND OFTEN DO NOT HAVE THE LONGEVITY OF METALS OR COMPOSITES IN USE, THE RMAF WILL REQUIRE SPECIFIC CAPABILITIES TO WORK WITH SOFTGOODS ELEMENTS. SOFTGOODS COMPONENTS USE SEVERAL MATERIALS FORMATS (COATED FABRICS, TEXTILES, FILMS, WEBBINGS, ETC.) WHICH ARE THEMSELVES COMPRISED OF A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS (POLYURETHANE, POLYETHYLENE, POLYESTER, POLYIMIDE, NOMEX, VECTRAN, ELASTOMERS, ETC.). THE PROCESSES REQUIRED TO REPAIR AND REWORK SOFTGOODS TYPICALLY INCLUDE SEWING, THERMAL WELDING, ADHESIVE BONDING, AND TAPING. 80NSSC21K1883 - OUR PROPOSED RESEARCH IN THIS NASA M-STTR PROGRAM IS CATEGORIZED IN THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, WHICH IS THE NASA TECHNOLOGY TAXONOMY 14 AND THE FOCUS AREA 17 OF NASA SBIR/STTR. RAPID MINIATURIZATION OF ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS HAS MADE EXTREME CHALLENGES FOR THE THERMAL MANAGEMENT OF THESE EVER-INCREASING HEAT FLUX DEVICES IN SPACECRAFTS. TO ENSURE THE RELIABLE OPERATION OF FUTURE HIGH-POWER DENSITY COMPONENTS, IT IS NECESSARY TO DEVELOP EFFECTIVE THERMAL CONTROL SYSTEMS (TCSS) TO OVERCOME THE LIMITATIONS OF CURRENTLY USED COOLING SYSTEMS. A TCS IS A KEY TECHNOLOGY TO MAINTAIN THE TEMPERATURE OF ALL SPACECRAFT COMPONENTS WITHIN ALLOWABLE LIMITS DURING ALL MISSION PHASES. IN THIS M-STTR PROGRAM, THE UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (UDC), A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY (HBCU), IN COLLABORATION WITH A SMALL BUSINESS, WILL DEMONSTRATE THE THERMAL CAPABILITY OF ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED COLD PLATES OF AN INNOVATIVE TWO-PHASE TCS THAT HAS BEEN RECENTLY DEVELOPED BY THE SMALL BUSINESS. THIS COOLING TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO ACHIEVE LOW THERMAL RESISTANCES AND OPERATE WITH LOW PUMPING POWER FOR REMOVING LARGE AMOUNTS OF HEAT FROM MULTIPLE HIGH HEAT FLUX DEVICES. DURING THIS M-STTR PROGRAM, UDC WILL IMPROVE THE DESIGN OF COLD PLATES AND FABRICATE THEM. THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE TESTING WILL BE PERFORMED IN COLLABORATION BETWEEN UDC AND THE SMALL BUSINESS. UDC S PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL REDUCE THE CURRENT MULTIPLE LABOR-INTENSIVE STEPS FOR FABRICATION OF COLD PLATES INTO ONE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESS, WHICH IS AN IMPORTANT STEP FOR COMMERCIALIZATION OF THIS NOVEL TCS.

80NSSC21K1454 - FOR ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY, ONE OF THE GRAND CHALLENGES IS TO BUILD A QUANTITATIVE, PREDICTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE BUDGETS OF TROPOSPHERIC OZONE (O3) AND METHANE (CH4). IN TERMS OF MANAGING CLIMATE CHANGE AND AIR QUALITY OVER THIS CENTURY WE NEED CHEMISTRY-CLIMATE MODELS (CCMS) WITH SOLID PREDICTIVE CAPABILITY. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A SET OF OBSERVATION-BASED, PROCESS-ORIENTED METRICS TO TEST CCMS ON THEIR ABILITY TO MATCH CONDITIONS RELATED TO THE O3 AND CH4 BUDGETS. THE CORE DATA FOR THESE METRICS WILL COME FROM THE NASA DC8 AIRCRAFT IN SITU MEASUREMENTS FROM SEVERAL RECENT CAMPAIGNS. THE MAJOR TASK IS TO BUILD AN OBSERVATIONAL DATABASE OF CHEMICAL STATISTICS, INCLUDING HIGH-ORDER PRODUCTS AND CHEMICAL REACTION RATES THAT RELATE TO THESE BUDGETS. COMBINED WITH MODEL DIAGNOSTICS, THESE BECOME METRICS THAT CAN TEST AND DIFFERENTIATE ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF CCMS SO AS TO IDENTIFY GOOD PERFORMERS AND OUTLIERS. THESE METRICS WILL BE DEVELOPED AND TESTED WITH COMMUNITY INPUT AND WILL BE READY FOR THE PLANNING OF THE NEXT MAJOR CYCLE OF CLIMATE ASSESSMENTS, WHICH HAVE NOW BECOME A STANDARD CYCLE FOR ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY MODELS. THE OVERALL GOAL HERE IS TO PROVIDE METRICS FOR GUIDANCE IN MODEL DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING, IN ORDER TO DOCUMENT IMPROVEMENTS IN OUR ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY MODELS REGARDING THE BUDGETS OF O3 AND CH4 AND OTHER PHOTO-OXIDIZED SPECIES. THE PRIMARY DATA SETS USED HERE ARE FROM AIRCRAFT IN SITU MEASUREMENTS THAT GIVE A NEAR-COMPLETE MEASUREMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION ON A 10-SECOND FLIGHT PATH. AS WE HAVE SHOWN FOR THE ATMOSPHERIC TOMOGRAPHY (ATOM) MISSION, SUCH DATA ALLOW US TO CALCULATE THE DAILY BUDGETS OF O3, CH4 AND OTHER PHOTO-OXIDIZED SPECIES SUCH AS CO OR DIMETHYL SULFIDE. WE WILL COMBINE THE ATOM DATA (REPRESENTING THE VAST REMOTE-FROM-POLLUTION ATMOSPHERE) WITH THE KORUS-AQ AND FIREX-AQ DATA (REPRESENTING THE IMMEDIATE POLLUTION-SOURCE ATMOSPHERE), THUS PROVIDING US A VIEW OF THE RANGES IN PHOTOCHEMISTRY. WE PLAN TO DEVELOP METRICS FOR CCMS THAT EXAMINE THE PRODUCTION AND LOSS OF O3, FOLLOWING FROM NEAR SOURCE TO REMOTE TROPOSPHERE, AND IDENTIFYING THE SPECIFIC NATURE OF CHEMISTRY THAT DRIVES IT. THE OTHER CRITICAL COMPONENT OF THE O3 BUDGET IS THE STRATOSPHERE TO TROPOSPHERE EXCHANGE (STE) FLUX. WHILE WE CAN EASILY 'SEE' STE FOLDING EVENTS, IT IS NIGH IMPOSSIBLE TO INTEGRATE THE NET O3 FLUX WITH ANY DEGREE OF CERTAINTY. INSTEAD, OUR STRATEGY USES A MIX OF O3 AND N2O MEASUREMENTS FROM AURA MLS AND OMI, SCISAT/ACE, AND NOAA SURFACE MEASUREMENTS OF N2O. THESE METRICS ARE EFFECTIVE PROXIES FOR THE ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND TRANSPORT PROCESSES RELATED TO STE, AND GOOD MODEL PERFORMANCE FOR THESE GIVES CONFIDENCE IN THE MODEL DERIVED O3 FLUX. THIS RESEARCH IS CLEARLY TIED TO SEVERAL OF THE ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION FOCUS AREA SCIENCE QUESTIONS: IT DOCUMENTS AND HELPS EXPLAIN CHANGING COMPOSITION IT QUANTIFIES THE STRATOSPHERIC INFLUX OF OZONE AND POSSIBLE SURFACE AIR QUALITY EFFECTS IT BUILDS CONFIDENCE IN MODEL PROJECTIONS OF LIFETIMES AND FLUXES IN THE FUTURE. IN TERMS OF THE ACCDAM CALL, IT COMBINES AIRCRAFT DATA SETS IN NEW WAYS AND EXTENDS THEIR USE EVALUATING CHEMISTRY-CLIMATE MODELS. IN TERMS OF THE OVERALL EARTH SCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAM, IT PROVIDES A NEW BASIS FOR EVALUATING NASA CHEMISTRY MODELS AND THE MERRA-2 METEOROLOGICAL FIELDS.

THEY ARE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTORS TO ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS AT THE SEASONAL TIMESCALE AND RECORD THE EVOLUTION OF THE MARTIAN CLIMATE AT LONGER TIMESCALES. THEREFORE, DETERMINING THE EVOLUTION OF THE POLAR CAPS OVER TIME IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE FOR CLIMATE MODELING AND UNDERSTANDING RELATED PROCESSES SUCH AS THE TOTAL PRESSURE CYCLE, WHICH IS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY POLAR CAP SUBLIMATION. THE SOUTH POLAR RESIDUAL CAP (SPRC) INCLUDES SUBLIMATION PITS, THE SO-CALLED SWISS CHEESE TERRAINS. SPRC PITS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED TO GROW WITH TIME AND REPRESENT ONE STAGE OF THE MARTIAN CO2 CYCLE IN WHICH CO2 ICE MASS IS RETURNED TO THE ATMOSPHERE THROUGH SEASONAL SUBLIMATION DURING THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE SUMMER. HOWEVER, THIS GROWTH HAS NOT BEEN FULLY CHARACTERIZED WITH RESPECT TO TIME, GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND RELATED PARAMETERS. OUR GOAL IS TO DETERMINE THE TIME EVOLUTION OF SOUTH POLE RESIDUAL CAP (SPRC) PITS AND THE VOLUME OF CO2 ICE LOST BY SUBLIMATION IN THE MARTIAN SOUTH POLE. OUR OBJECTIVES ARE AS FOLLOW: 1 - DETERMINE THE SIZE EVOLUTION OF THE PITS OVER TIME AND AS A FUNCTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION ON THE POLAR CAP 2 - DETERMINE THE CORRESPONDING VOLUMES OF CO2 SUBLIMATED FROM THE SURFACE 3 - EXTRAPOLATE THE PREVIOUS RESULTS TO THE WHOLE SOUTHERN POLAR CAP AND ESTIMATE THE RESULTING INFLUENCE ON THE MARTIAN CLIMATE CYCLE. SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT: THE PROPOSED WORK WOULD BE CARRIED OUT OVER THE SPAN OF 3 YEARS AND INVOLVES THREE PRIMARY TASKS: IN TASK 1, WE WILL SURVEY THE SPRC FOR SUBLIMATION PIT LOCATIONS WITH RECURRING, FREQUENT IMAGES ACQUIRED BY HIRISE. WE WILL INVESTIGATE THE SUBLIMATION PITS OF INTEREST USING OBJECT-BASED IMAGE ANALYSIS (OBIA) TO IDENTIFY AND MEASURE PIT AREAS WHILE SYSTEMATICALLY CALCULATING GROWTH RATES IN TERMS OF AREA CHANGE. THE OBIA APPROACH WILL INCLUDE CREATING TRIMBLE ECOGNITION RULESETS, ALLOWING THE PIT SHAPES TO BE EFFICIENTLY EXTRACTED FROM THE HIRISE IMAGES. THE RESULTS OF THE OBIA WILL BE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS MANUALLY CALCULATED PIT MEASUREMENTS. THE CONCLUSION OF THIS STEP WILL BE TO DETERMINE THE EVOLUTION OF THE PIT SURFACE AREA AS A FUNCTION OF TIME AND GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION ON THE SOUTH POLAR CAP. IN TASK 2, WE WILL DETERMINE THE VOLUME OF CO2 ICE LOST THROUGH LOCAL SUBLIMATION BY CREATING DIGITAL TERRAIN MODELS (DTMS) OF LOCATIONS ACROSS THE SPRC FOR WHICH HIRISE STEREO-PAIR IMAGES ARE AVAILABLE. DTMS WILL ALSO BE CREATED USING CONTEXT CAMERA (CTX) IMAGES TO ASSESS VOLUME LOSS THROUGH TIME AT A COARSER RESOLUTION OVER LARGER AREAS TO GAIN FULL SPRC COVERAGE. DTMS WILL BE CREATED USING ESTABLISHED WORKFLOWS WITHIN THE NASA AMES STEREO PIPELINE PAIRED WITH THE USGS INTEGRATED SOFTWARE FOR IMAGERS AND SPECTROMETERS (ISIS 3) . FINALLY, IN TASK 3, WE WILL QUANTIFY THE CO2 ICE LOST THROUGH SUBLIMATION ON THE CAP BY EXTRAPOLATING AND VALIDATING DATA COLLECTED IN TASKS 2 AND 3 TO LOCATIONS THAT LACK RECURRING HIRISE IMAGE COVERAGE TO CREATE A MAP OF ESTIMATED CO2 ICE LOSS THROUGH TIME FOR THE ENTIRE SPRC. WE WILL THEN COMPARE THE RESULTING ESTIMATES TO VARIATIONS IN OTHER DATASETS, AND PARTICULARLY THE SEASONAL PRESSURE CHANGES. RELEVANCE: THIS WORK IS RELEVANT TO NASA S MARS DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM BECAUSE IT UTILIZES IMAGERY ACQUIRED BY THE HIRISE AND CTX CAMERAS ON THE MARS RECONNAISSANCE ORBITER TO INVESTIGATE OUTSTANDING QUESTIONS ABOUT SUBLIMATION PITS ON THE SPRC ON MARS. STUDYING HOW THESE CO2 ICE PITS HAVE FORMED AND EVOLVED THROUGH TIME WILL ALSO LEAD TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RECENT HISTORY OF THE SPRC AND THE CO2 ICE CYCLE ON MARS.

80NSSC21K1088 - SCIENTIFIC/TECHNICAL/MANAGEMENT MARS HAS A MASSIVE, UP TO 1 KM-THICK CO2 ICE DEPOSIT BURIED BENEATH A ~10 M-THICK LAYER OF H2O ICE AT ITS SOUTH POLE. IF RELEASED, THE BURIED CO2 ICE COULD DOUBLE MARS ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND SIGNIFICANTLY ALTER MARS CLIMATE. THE BURIED CO2 ICE DEPOSIT ARISES FROM DEPOSITION OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2 AT TIMES OF LOW OBLIQUITY (LESS POLAR SUNLIGHT) THAT IS SUBSEQUENTLY BURIED BY A LAYER OF H2O ICE. THE MANNER AND FREQUENCY IN WHICH THE BURIED CO2 IS RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE IS AN OPEN QUESTION WITH PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS FOR MARS CLIMATE. ONE HYPOTHESIS PROPOSES THAT THE H2O ICE LAYER IS PERMEABLE TO CO2 GAS FLOW, SUCH THAT THE BURIED CO2 FREELY AND GRADUALLY EQUILIBRATES WITH THE ATMOSPHERE AS MARS OBLIQUITY EVOLVES. AN ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS PROPOSES THAT THE H2O LAYER PHYSICALLY AND THERMALLY SEQUESTERS THE BURIED CO2 FROM THE ATMOSPHERE, SUCH THAT THE BURIED CO2 IS RELEASED ONLY RARELY, WHEN THE H2O LAYER IS ABLATED AT TIMES OF CRITICALLY HIGH OBLIQUITY. IMPORTANTLY, MARS MEAN PRESSURE THROUGHOUT ALL OF THE AMAZONIAN WOULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER IF H2O ICE LAYERS TYPICALLY SEQUESTER A PORTION OF MARS CO2 INVENTORY AS BURIED CO2 ICE. THUS, DETERMINING WHETHER H2O LAYERS SEQUESTER THE BURIED CO2 HAS SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES FOR UNDERSTANDING AMAZONIAN MARS CLIMATE, HABITABILITY, AND SURFACE GEOLOGIC PROCESSES. EACH OF THE TWO HYPOTHESES PREDICTS DIFFERENT MORPHOLOGIC DEVELOPMENT AND SEASONAL TEMPERATURE BEHAVIOR OF THE H2O ICE LAYER. THEREFORE, WE WILL ANALYZE THE MORPHOLOGIC AND THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE H2O ICE LAYER IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE H2O ICE LAYER SEQUESTERS THE BURIED CO2. METHODOLOGY TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL WE WILL: 1. USE CONTEXT CAMERA (CTX) AND HIGH-RESOLUTION IMAGING SCIENCE EXPERIMENT (HIRISE) IMAGES AND DIGITAL TERRAIN MODELS TO MAP THE MORPHOLOGY AND STRUCTURE OF THE TOPMOST H2O LAYER. 2. USE CTX TO OBSERVE THE SPATIOTEMPORAL EXPOSURE OF THE H2O LAYER THROUGH OVERLYING SEASONAL CO2 FROST AND HOLES IN THE RSPC, COUPLED WITH THERMAL EMISSION IMAGING SYSTEM (THEMIS) DATA TO MAP THE SEASONAL TEMPERATURE CYCLE OF THE EXPOSED H2O REGIONS. 3. QUANTITATIVELY MODEL THE MORPHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE H2O LAYER AND HEAT TRANSFER THROUGH THE H2O LAYER, MATCHED TO OBSERVATION, TO DETERMINE WHETHER CO2 SUBLIMES THROUGH THE H2O LAYER. 4. MODEL SINTERING RATES OF THE H2O LAYER BASED ON THE OBSERVED THERMAL ENVIRONMENT TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE H2O LAYER WILL BECOME IMPERMEABLE TO CO2 GAS FLOW. RELEVANCE TO MARS DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM (MDAP) ROSES 2020 CALL C.9 (MARS DATA ANALYSIS) STATES THAT, THE OBJECTIVE OF THE MARS DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM (MDAP) IS TO ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC RETURN FROM MISSIONS TO MARS CONDUCTED BY NASA AND OTHER SPACE AGENCIES [, INCLUDING] MARS ODYSSEY (MO), [AND] MARS RECONNAISSANCE ORBITER (MRO). VOC SOURCES ARE NOTORIOUSLY UNDER-CHARACTERIZED, ESPECIALLY IN URBAN AREAS WHERE BIOGENIC EMISSIONS MODELS MAY BE LESS ACCURATE AND SOME ANTHROPOGENIC SOURCE SECTORS REMAIN UNQUANTIFIED. AS BOTH A VOC OXIDATION PRODUCT AND A SOURCE OF OXIDANTS, HCHO IS A CENTRAL TEST-POINT FOR MODELS OF SECONDARY POLLUTANT FORMATION. THE RECENT LAUNCH OF TROPOMI AND NEAR-FUTURE LAUNCH OF TEMPO GIVE NEW ABILITY TO RESOLVE HCHO ENHANCEMENTS IN AN URBAN OUTFLOW, BUT MORE WORK IS NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND BIASES IN SATELLITE-BASED HCHO MEASUREMENTS, AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO SURFACE LEVEL CONCENTRATIONS AND OZONE FORMATION. PROJECT GOALS ARE ENCOMPASSED IN THREE OBJECTIVES: (1) IMPLEMENT A MORE ACCURATE, LESS RESOURCE INTENSIVE HCHO MONITORING STRATEGY TO AID IN THE INTERPRETATION OF CURRENT AND NEAR FUTURE SATELLITE BASED HCHO OBSERVATIONS. (2) DETERMINE THE DRIVING CAUSES OF SPATIOTEMPORAL HCHO VARIABILITY ACROSS AN URBAN-RURAL GRADIENT, AND EVALUATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBSERVED VARIABILITY, URBAN EMISSIONS, AND OZONE PRODUCTION. (3) WORK WITH LOCAL AIR QUALITY MANAGERS TO IMPROVE THE USE OF SATELLITE BASED HCHO IN THEIR ANALYSIS OF OZONE PRODUCTION SENSITIVITIES AND SEVERE POLLUTION EVENTS.
